Multiple unquoted Windows search path vulnerabilities in the (1) File Collector and (2) File PlaceHolder services in Symantec Enterprise Vault (EV) for File System Archiving before 9.0.4 and 10.x before 10.0.1 allow local users to gain privileges via a Trojan horse program.

The weakness was disclosed 03/21/2013 by Sean McCarthy with NCC Group Research as SYM13-003 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at symantec.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Symantec. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-1609 since 02/04/2013. An attack has to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 63155 (Microsoft Windows Unquoted Service Path Enumeration), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows.

Upgrading to version 10.0.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (82989) and Tenable (63155). The entries 67209, 66473 and 70731 are pretty similar.
