Netgear Management System NMS300 up to 1.5.0.11 data/config/image.do realName path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.
8.6$0-$5k0.00

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Netgear Management System NMS300 up to 1.5.0.11 (Router Operating System). This affects an unknown part of the file data/config/image.do. The manipulation of the argument realName with the input value .. leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:

Directory traversal vulnerability in data/config/image.do in NETGEAR Management System NMS300 1.5.0.11 and earlier allows remote authenticated users to read arbitrary files via a .. (dot dot) in the realName parameter.

The weakness was disclosed 02/13/2016 (Website). The advisory is shared at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2016-1525 since 01/06/2016. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.

A public exploit has been developed by Metasploit and been published 3 weeks after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as highly functional. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 124694 (Netgear Management System NMS300 Multiple Security Vulnerabilities).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Exploit-DB (39515). The entry 80936 is pretty similar.
