A vulnerability was found in PHP 5.5.32 (Programming Language Software). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function phar_parse_zipfile of the file ext/phar/zip.c. The weakness was presented 03/13/2016 as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-3142 since 03/13/2016. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The following code is the reason for this vulnerability:

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 93161 (SUSE SLES11 Security Update : php53 (SUSE-SU-2016:1638-1) (BACKRONYM)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 168777 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for php53 (SUSE-SU-2016:1145-1)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.php.net. A possible mitigation has been published 4 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The vulnerability will be addressed with the following lines of code:
