A vulnerability has been found in Xmlsoft libxml2 2.9.0 (Document Processing Software) and classified as very critical. This vulnerability affects the function htmlParseChunk of the file HTMLparser.c of the component HTML Parser. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-399. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Multiple use-after-free vulnerabilities in libxml2 2.9.0 and possibly other versions might allow context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via vectors related to the (1) htmlParseChunk and (2) xmldecl_done functions, as demonstrated by a buffer overflow in the xmlBufGetInputBase function.

The weakness was presented 12/14/2012 by Zan Dobersek as 690202 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.gnome.org. The public release happened without coordination with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-1969 since 02/19/2013. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 05/08/2021).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74982 (openSUSE Security Update : libxml2 (openSUSE-SU-2013:0945-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.gnome.org.
