The Extensions subsystem in Google Chrome before 50.0.2661.75 incorrectly relies on GetOrigin method calls for origin comparisons, which allows remote attackers to bypass the Same Origin Policy and obtain sensitive information via a crafted extension.
The weakness was disclosed 04/18/2016 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at googlechromereleases.blogspot.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-1658 since 01/12/2016. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 91176 (GLSA-201605-02 : Chromium: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 168812 (OpenSuSE Security Update for Chromium (openSUSE-SU-2016:1136-1)).
Upgrading to version 50.0.2661.75 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at chrome.google.com. A possible mitigation has been published 4 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
