A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.3.4 on PowerPC (Operating System). This affects an unknown code of the component Signal Implementation. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The signal implementation in the Linux kernel before 4.3.5 on powerpc platforms does not check for an MSR with both the S and T bits set, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (TM Bad Thing exception and panic) via a crafted application.
The weakness was disclosed 04/27/2016 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2015-8844 since 04/13/2016. The exploitability is told to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. A authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 95321 (CentOS 7 : kernel (CESA-2016:2574)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 236154 (Red Hat Update for kernel-rt (RHSA-2016:2584)).
Upgrading to version 4.3.5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 8 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (95321). The entries 79925, 80182, 82948 and 92395 are pretty similar.
