A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 4.5.0 (Operating System). Affected by this issue is the function mct_u232_msr_to_state
of the file drivers/usb/serial/mct_u232.c of the component USB Device Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The mct_u232_msr_to_state function in drivers/usb/serial/mct_u232.c in the Linux kernel before 4.5.1 allows physically proximate attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and system crash) via a crafted USB device without two interrupt-in endpoint descriptors.
The weakness was shared 05/02/2016 by Ralf Spenneberg with RCE Security (Website). The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-3136 since 03/13/2016. The attack needs to be approached locally. The requirement for exploitation is a simple authentication. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed by OpenSource Security and been published even before and not after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 24 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 90330 (Fedora 24 : kernel-4.5.0-302.fc24 (2016-81fd1b03aa)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196463 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Linux Vulnerabilities (USN-2965-1)).
Upgrading to version 4.5.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (90330) and Exploit-DB (39541). The entries 81364, 81365, 81366 and 81378 are related to this item.
