A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 4.5.0 (Operating System) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function acm_probe
of the file drivers/usb/class/cdc-acm.c of the component USB Descriptor Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The acm_probe function in drivers/usb/class/cdc-acm.c in the Linux kernel before 4.5.1 allows physically proximate attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and system crash) via a USB device without both a control and a data endpoint descriptor.
The weakness was released 05/02/2016 (Website). The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-3138 since 03/13/2016. Local access is required to approach this attack. The successful exploitation requires a single authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 90330 (Fedora 24 : kernel-4.5.0-302.fc24 (2016-81fd1b03aa)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196463 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Linux Vulnerabilities (USN-2965-1)).
Upgrading to version 4.5.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
