A vulnerability was found in D-Link DSL-320B 1.23. It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the file /home/home_parent.xgi. The manipulation of the argument hostname
with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The bug was discovered 03/17/2013. The weakness was disclosed 05/06/2013 by Michael Messner (m1k3) with s3cur1ty as not defined mailinglist post (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.
After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 44 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
Upgrading to version 1.25 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Exploit-DB (25251). The entries 8609, 8610, 8611 and 8613 are pretty similar.
