XenSource Xen 4.3/4.4/4.5/4.6 Qemu VGA Module integer overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in XenSource Xen 4.3/4.4/4.5/4.6 (Virtualization Software). Affected is an unknown part of the component Qemu VGA Module. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Integer overflow in the VGA module in QEMU allows local guest OS users to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read and QEMU process crash) by editing VGA registers in VBE mode.

The weakness was disclosed 05/09/2016 by Alibaba as XSA-179 as confirmed security advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at xenbits.xen.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2016-3712 since 03/30/2016. The exploitability is told to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 91352 (Citrix XenServer Multiple Vulnerabilities (CTX212736)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc. and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196471 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Qemu, Qemu-kvm Vulnerabilities (USN-2974-1)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (113039) and Tenable (91352). The entry 87131 is pretty similar.
