ISC BIND up to 9.10.4-P1 IXFR Response input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in ISC BIND up to 9.10.4-P1 (Domain Name Software). This issue affects an unknown code block of the component IXFR Response Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

ISC BIND through 9.10.4-P1 allows primary DNS servers to cause a denial of service (secondary DNS server crash) via a large AXFR response, and possibly allows IXFR servers to cause a denial of service (IXFR client crash) via a large IXFR response and allows remote authenticated users to cause a denial of service (primary DNS server crash) via a large UPDATE message.

The weakness was released 07/06/2016 as confirmed posting (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-6170 since 07/06/2016. The attack may be initiated remotely. The requirement for exploitation is a simple authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 99499 (openSUSE Security Update : bind (openSUSE-2017-491)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 169849 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for bind (SUSE-SU-2017:0998-1)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (99499). seclists.org is providing further details. Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 88750, 88752 and 96764.
