Apache Subversion up to 1.6.21 check-mime-type.pl svnlook -* input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Apache Subversion (Versioning Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects the function svnlook of the file contrib/hook-scripts/check-mime-type.pl. The manipulation of the argument -* with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

contrib/hook-scripts/svn-keyword-check.pl in Subversion before 1.6.23 allows remote authenticated users with commit permissions to execute arbitrary commands via shell metacharacters in a filename.

The weakness was presented 05/31/2013 by Daniel Shahaf with elego Software Solutions GmbH as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at subversion.apache.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-2088 since 02/19/2013. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. The successful exploitation needs a simple authentication. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed by GlacierZ0ne and been published 4 years after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71566 (Apache Subversion 1.6.x / 1.7.x / 1.8.x < 1.6.23 / 1.7.11 / 1.8.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121469 (Apache Subversion Multiple Security Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading to version 1.6.23, 1.7.11 or 1.8.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at mail-archives.apache.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (84719), Tenable (71566) and Exploit-DB (40507). See 8932, 8934 and 8935 for similar entries.
