The weakness was disclosed 04/04/2013 as Issue 241595 as confirmed bug report (Website). The advisory is shared at code.google.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Google. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-2836 since 04/11/2013. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66549 (FreeBSD : chromium -- multiple vulnerabilities (358133b5-c2b9-11e2-a738-00262d5ed8ee)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121201 (Google Chrome Prior to 27.0.1453.93 Multiple Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 27.0.1453.93 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at google.com. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Internet Explorer or Opera as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
