epan/dissectors/packet-umts_fp.c in the UMTS FP dissector in Wireshark 1.12.x before 1.12.12 and 2.x before 2.0.4 mishandles the reserved C/T value, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted packet.
The weakness was disclosed 08/07/2016 by Mateusz Jurczyk (iDefense) with iDEFENSE Labs (Website). The advisory is available at openwall.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-5353 since 06/09/2016. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 91820 (Wireshark 1.12.x < 1.12.12 Multiple DoS), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175781 (Debian Security Update for wireshark (DSA 3615-1)).
Upgrading to version 1.12.12 or 2.0.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (91820). The entries 80763, 88027, 90422 and 90619 are pretty similar.
