PowerDNS (aka pdns) Authoritative Server before 3.4.10 does not properly handle a . (dot) inside labels, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (backend CPU consumption) via a crafted DNS query.

The weakness was shared 09/09/2016 by Florian Heinz and Martin Kluge as PowerDNS Security Advisory 2016-01 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at doc.powerdns.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-5427 since 06/10/2016. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
