X.org xdm 1.1.10 Authentication crypt cryptographic issues

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in X.org xdm 1.1.10. It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function crypt of the component Authentication. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issues vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-310. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

X.Org xdm 1.1.10, 1.1.11, and possibly other versions, when performing authentication using certain implementations of the crypt API function that can return NULL, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and crash) by attempting to log into an account whose password field contains invalid characters, as demonstrated using the crypt function from glibc 2.17 and later with (1) the "!" character in the salt portion of a password field or (2) a password that has been encrypted using DES or MD5 in FIPS-140 mode.

The weakness was disclosed 06/07/2013 by Alan Coopersmith as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-2179 since 02/19/2013. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1600.

After 4 days, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is available at seclists.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75068 (openSUSE Security Update : xdm (openSUSE-SU-2013:1117-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at cgit.freedesktop.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (85130) and Tenable (75068).
