The roq_decode_init function in libavcodec/roqvideodec.c in FFmpeg before 1.1 allows remote attackers to have an unspecified impact via a crafted (1) width or (2) height dimension that is not a multiple of sixteen in id RoQ video data.
The issue has been introduced in 09/30/2012. The weakness was disclosed 11/29/2012 by Mateusz Jurczyk and Gynvael Coldwind (j00ru) with Google Security Team as roqvideodec: check dimensions validity as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is available at git.videolan.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-0849 since 01/07/2013. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 60 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72355 (Debian DSA-2855-1 : libav - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175271 (Debian Security Update for libav (DSA-2855-1)).
Upgrading to version 1.1 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at git.videolan.org. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.videolan.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (89879) and Tenable (72355). The entries 7629, 9154, 9155 and 9158 are pretty similar.
