The archive_string_append function in archive_string.c in libarchive before 3.2.0 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a crafted cab files, related to "overlapping memcpy."
The weakness was disclosed 09/20/2016 (Website). The advisory is shared at lists.opensuse.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-8918 since 06/17/2016. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 93187 (SUSE SLES11 Security Update : bsdtar (SUSE-SU-2016:1939-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 169015 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for bsdtar (SUSE-SU-2016:1939-1)).
Upgrading to version 3.2.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
