WildFly 10.0.0 Undertow Web Server Header crlf injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability has been found in WildFly 10.0.0 (Application Server Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the component Undertow Web Server. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a crlf injection vulnerability (Header). The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-93. The product uses CRLF (carriage return line feeds) as a special element, e.g. to separate lines or records, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes CRLF sequences from inputs. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

CRLF injection vulnerability in the Undertow web server in WildFly 10.0.0, as usued in Red Hat JBoss Enterprise Application Platform (EAP) 7.x before 7.0.2, allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary HTTP headers and conduct HTTP response splitting attacks via unspecified vectors.

The weakness was presented 09/26/2016 by Mikhail with NCC Group (Website). The advisory is shared at rhn.redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-4993 since 05/24/2016. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 105252 (RHEL 6 / 7 : eap7-jboss-ec2-eap (RHSA-2017:3458)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 236580 (Red Hat Update for JBoss Enterprise Application Platform 7.1.0 (RHSA-2017:3455)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (105252). See 92175, 92322, 95800 and 105645 for similar entries.
