A vulnerability was found in Cisco Linksys X3000 1.0.03 build 001 (Router Operating System). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the file apply.cgi. The manipulation of the argument ping_ip/sortby with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

The bug was discovered 01/28/2013. The weakness was published 06/22/2013 by Michael Messner (m1k3) with s3cur1ty as not defined mailinglist post (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. The public release has been coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-3307 since 04/29/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. Required for exploitation is a simple authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.

A public exploit has been developed by m-1-k-3 and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at seclists.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 144 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.

Upgrading to version 1.0.05 build 002 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 46082.
