A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Adobe Acrobat Reader up to 11.0.17/15.006.30201/15.017.20053 (Document Reader Software). Affected is some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. The weakness was presented 10/06/2016 by Sebastian Apelt with Fortinet's FortiGuard Labs as APSB16-33 as confirmed security bulletin (Website). The advisory is available at helpx.adobe.com. The vendor advisory states that the initial disclosure was October 6, 2016. But it appears that the advisory got released on October 11, 2016 to the public. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2016-6978 since 08/23/2016. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 94074 (Adobe Reader < 11.0.18 / 15.006.30243 / 15.020.20039 Multiple Vulnerabilities (APSB16-33) (macOS)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370154 (Adobe Reader and Acrobat Multiple Vulnerabilities (APSB16-33)).

Upgrading to version 11.0.18, 15.006.30243 or 15.020.20039 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
