Apple macOS up to 10.12.1 OpenLDAP RC4 cryptographic issues

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability has been found in Apple macOS up to 10.12.1 (Operating System) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part of the component OpenLDAP. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issues vulnerability (RC4). The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-310. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Web Server in Apple OS X Server before 5.1 supports the RC4 algorithm, which makes it easier for remote attackers to defeat cryptographic protection mechanisms via unspecified vectors.

The bug was discovered 03/21/2016. The weakness was published 12/13/2016 as HT207423 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-1777 since 01/13/2016. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1600 for this issue. The advisory points out:

RC4 was removed as a default cipher.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 117588 (Apple TV < 12 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc. and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 371218 (Apple macOS Mojave 10.14 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2018-9-24-1)).

Upgrading to version 10.12.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (117588). Similar entries are available at 78550, 78551, 79411 and 79583.
