A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Cryptocat up to 2.0.21. This issue affects the function Math.random
of the file strophe.js of the component Random Generator. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a missing encryption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-311. The product does not encrypt sensitive or critical information before storage or transmission. Impacted is confidentiality, and integrity.
The weakness was presented 11/07/2012 by Mario Heiderich, Krzysztof Koktowicz and Maxim Rupp with Cure53 as confirmed bulletin (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at blog.crypto.cat. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the project team. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-4102 since 06/12/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1600 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
Upgrading to version 2.0.22 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
