A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Pidgin (Messaging Software) (affected version not known). This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component MXIT Protocol Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
A buffer overflow vulnerability exists in the handling of the MXIT protocol in Pidgin. Specially crafted MXIT data sent from the server could potentially result in arbitrary code execution. A malicious server or an attacker who intercepts the network traffic can send an invalid size for a packet which will trigger a buffer overflow.
The bug was discovered 06/21/2016. The weakness was shared 01/06/2017 by Yves Younan with Cisco Talos (Website). The advisory is shared at debian.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-2376 since 02/12/2016. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 13 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 91922 (Debian DLA-542-1 : pidgin security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370081 (Pidgin Multiple Security Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (91922).
