of the file dns_internal.cc. The manipulation as part of a HTTP Request leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
Buffer overflow in the idnsALookup function in dns_internal.cc in Squid 3.2 through 3.2.11 and 3.3 through 3.3.6 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory corruption and server termination) via a long name in a DNS lookup request.
The issue has been introduced in 09/03/2010. The weakness was released 07/11/2013 by Nathan Hoad with Netbox Blue Pty Ltd as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at squid-cache.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-4115 since 06/12/2013. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1042 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69067 (Mandriva Linux Security Advisory : squid (MDVSA-2013:199)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 169027 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for squid3 (SUSE-SU-2016:1996-1)).
Upgrading to version 3.3.7 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13321.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (85564) and Tenable (69067).
