The weakness was disclosed 01/16/2017 by Joaquim Brasil as Reflected Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) in Atlassian Jira Software as not defined mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2016-6285. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details and a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue. The advisory points out:

During a code review analysis recently undergone by JIRA we were able to verify the existence of a reflected Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability.

A public exploit has been developed by Joaquim Brasil and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at seclists.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 187 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:includes/decorators/global-translations.jsp it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking.

Upgrading to version 7.2.2 eliminates this vulnerability.
