Cisco ASA CX Context-Aware Security Module resource management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Cisco ASA (Firewall Software) (affected version not known). It has been classified as problematic. Affected is some unknown functionality of the component CX Context-Aware Security Module. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-399. This is going to have an impact on availability.

The bug was discovered 01/25/2017. The weakness was published 01/25/2017 with Cisco as cisco-sa-20170125-cas / CSCva62946 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at tools.cisco.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2016-9225 since 11/06/2016. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The advisory points out:

A vulnerability in the data plane IP fragment handler of the Adaptive Security Appliance (ASA) CX Context-Aware Security module could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to cause the CX module to be unable to process further traffic, resulting in a denial of service (DoS) condition.

The advisory illustrates:

The vulnerability is due to improper handling of IP fragments. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending crafted fragmented IP traffic across the CX module. An exploit could allow the attacker to exhaust free packet buffers in shared memory (SHM), causing the CX module to be unable to process further traffic, resulting in a DoS condition.

It is possible to mitigate the problem by applying the configuration setting fragment chain 1. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:

Cisco has not released and will not release software updates that address this vulnerability. There are no workarounds that address this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at SecurityFocus (BID 95788†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1037696†).
