A vulnerability was found in TRE Library and musl libc (Software Library) (version now known). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple integer overflows in the TRE library and musl libc allow attackers to cause memory corruption via a large number of (1) states or (2) tags, which triggers an out-of-bounds write.
The bug was discovered 02/13/2017. The weakness was presented 02/13/2017 by Rich Felker (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at openwall.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-8859 since 10/19/2016. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 94990 (Fedora 25 : tre (2016-0a952a3bc0)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 170816 (OpenSUSE Security Update for tre (openSUSE-SU-2018:0222-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (94990). See VDB-77215 for similar entry.
