Linux Kernel up to 4.9.12 llc Subsystem input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 4.9.12 (Operating System). This issue affects an unknown code block of the component llc Subsystem. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The LLC subsystem in the Linux kernel before 4.9.13 does not ensure that a certain destructor exists in required circumstances, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (BUG_ON) or possibly have unspecified other impact via crafted system calls.

The bug was discovered 02/28/2017. The weakness was published 03/01/2017 by Salvatore Bonaccorso (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at openwall.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-6345 since 02/26/2017. An attack has to be approached locally. The requirement for exploitation is a simple authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 97640 (Debian DLA-849-1 : linux security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175984 (Debian Security Update for Linux (DSA 3804-1)).

Upgrading to version 4.9.13 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (97640). Similar entries are available at 97226, 97281, 97446 and 97448.
