ImageMagick 6.9.1-3 coders/icon.c integer overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in ImageMagick 6.9.1-3 (Image Processing Software). Affected is some unknown processing of the file coders/icon.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Integer overflow in coders/icon.c in ImageMagick 6.9.1-3 and later allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted length value, which triggers a buffer overflow.

The bug was discovered 05/28/2015. The weakness was presented 03/15/2017 by Moshe Kaplan (oss-sec). The advisory is available at openwall.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2015-8895 since 06/02/2016. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 386 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 91712 (Scientific Linux Security Update : ImageMagick on SL6.x, SL7.x i386/x86_64 (20160617)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Scientific Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 157210 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for ImageMagick (ELSA-2016-1237)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (91712). See 98117, 98119, 98120 and 98121 for similar entries.
