Samba up to 3.5.21 Packet nttrans.c read_nttrans_ea_list numeric error

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability has been found in Samba up to 3.5.21 (File Transfer Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function read_nttrans_ea_list of the file nttrans.c of the component Packet Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-189. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

Integer overflow in the read_nttrans_ea_list function in nttrans.c in smbd in Samba 3.x before 3.5.22, 3.6.x before 3.6.17, and 4.x before 4.0.8 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) via a malformed packet.

The weakness was shared 08/05/2013 by Jeremy Allison with Google as CVE-2013-4124 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at samba.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-4124 since 06/12/2013. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed by x90c in ANSI C and been published 3 weeks after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at x90c.org. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75121 (openSUSE Security Update : samba (openSUSE-SU-2013:1349-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 185084 (HP-UX Running HP CIFS Server (Samba) Multiple Vulnerabilities (HPSBUX03093)).

Upgrading to version 3.5.22 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at ftp.samba.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 16459.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (86185), Tenable (75121) and Exploit-DB (27778). The entry VDB-60307 is related to this item.
