The read_config_file function in lib/hesiod.c in Hesiod 3.2.1 falls back to the ".athena.mit.edu" default domain when opening the configuration file fails, which allows remote attackers to gain root privileges by poisoning the DNS cache.

The bug was discovered 01/20/2017. The weakness was released 03/28/2017 by Florian Weimer (oss-sec). The advisory is available at openwall.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2016-10152 since 01/20/2017. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to launch the attack remotely.
