Xen 4.4/4.5/4.6/4.7/4.8 Memory access control

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability (Memory). Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-284. The product does not restrict or incorrectly restricts access to a resource from an unauthorized actor. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

An issue (known as XSA-212) was discovered in Xen, with fixes available for 4.8.x, 4.7.x, 4.6.x, 4.5.x, and 4.4.x. The earlier XSA-29 fix introduced an insufficient check on XENMEM_exchange input, allowing the caller to drive hypervisor memory accesses outside of the guest provided input/output arrays.

The bug was discovered 04/04/2017. The weakness was disclosed 04/04/2017 by Jann Horn with Google Project Zero (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-7228 since 03/22/2017. The exploitation is known to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 99377 (Citrix XenServer multiple vulnerabilities (CTX222565)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc. and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 276570 (Fedora Security Update for xen (FEDORA-2017-054729ab08)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published 1 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (41870), Tenable (99377) and SecurityFocus (BID 97375†). The entries VDB-247553, VDB-251712, VDB-252394 and VDB-252395 are pretty similar.
