A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 2.4.28 (Operating System). It has been classified as critical. Affected is the function smb_proc_read
of the component smbfs. The manipulation as part of a SMB Reply leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Multiple vulnerabilities in the samba filesystem (smbfs) in Linux kernel 2.4 and 2.6 allow remote samba servers to cause a denial of service (crash) or gain sensitive information from kernel memory via a samba server (1) returning more data than requested to the smb_proc_read function, (2) returning a data offset from outside the samba packet to the smb_proc_readX function, (3) sending a certain TRANS2 fragmented packet to the smb_receive_trans2 function, (4) sending a samba packet with a certain header size to the smb_proc_readX_data function, or (5) sending a certain packet based offset for the data in a packet to the smb_receive_trans2 function.
The bug was discovered 09/25/2004. The weakness was released 11/17/2004 by Stefan Esser with eMatters (Website). The advisory is shared for download at security.e-matters.de. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2004-0883 since 09/22/2004. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 53 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20679 (Ubuntu 4.10 : linux-source-2.6.8.1 vulnerabilities (USN-60-0)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (18136) and Tenable (20679). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 1000, 999, 997 and 998.
