A vulnerability was found in PHP 5.5.1 (Programming Language Software). It has been classified as problematic. Affected is the function session_regenerate_id

Session fixation vulnerability in the Sessions subsystem in PHP before 5.5.2 allows remote attackers to hijack web sessions by specifying a session ID.
The weakness was presented 12/02/2011 as Request for Comments: Strict Sessions as confirmed posting (Wiki). The advisory is available at wiki.php.net. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2011-4718 since 12/09/2011. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a public exploit are known. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
A public exploit has been developed in HTTP Request. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69402 (PHP 5.5.x < 5.5.2 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350520 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for php54: ALAS-2013-224).
Upgrading to version 5.5.2 or 5.5.3 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at git.php.net. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.php.net. It is possible to mitigate the problem by applying the configuration setting use_strict_session = On
. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with ASP, JSP or CGI as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. OSVDB hält fäst: "[C]ontradictory reports from the vendor's bug report say that the fix was 'applied to 5.5.3', which had not yet been released as of 2013-08-17. It is currently unclear which is correct."
