A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in GNU binutils 2.28 (Programming Tool Software). Affected is the function coff_set_alignment_hook of the file coffcode.h of the component BFD Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. The function coff_set_alignment_hook in coffcode.h in Binary File Descriptor (BFD) library (aka libbfd), as distributed in GNU Binutils 2.28, has a memory leak vulnerability which can cause memory exhaustion in objdump via a crafted PE file. Additional validation in dump_relocs_in_section in objdump.c can resolve this.
The bug was discovered 04/27/2017. The weakness was disclosed 05/02/2017 as Bug 21440 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at sourceware.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2017-8421 since 05/02/2017. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 5 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 105225 (openSUSE Security Update : binutils (openSUSE-2017-1330)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 171830 (OpenSUSE Security Update for binutils (openSUSE-SU-2018:3223-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 8 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
