The function coff_set_alignment_hook in coffcode.h in Binary File Descriptor (BFD) library (aka libbfd), as distributed in GNU Binutils 2.28, has a memory leak vulnerability which can cause memory exhaustion in objdump via a crafted PE file. Additional validation in dump_relocs_in_section in objdump.c can resolve this.

The bug was discovered 04/27/2017. The weakness was disclosed 05/02/2017 as Bug 21440 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at sourceware.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2017-8421 since 05/02/2017. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
