A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Synology Photo Station up to 6.5.3 (Network Attached Storage Software). This affects an unknown code block of the file download.php. The manipulation of the argument id with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Directory traversal vulnerability in download.php in Synology Photo Station before 6.5.3-3226 allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via a full pathname in the id parameter.
The bug was discovered 09/23/2015. The weakness was disclosed 05/12/2017 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at synology.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2016-10331 since 04/18/2017. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1006 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
