A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Apple tvOS up to 10.2.0 (Digital Media Player). This issue affects an unknown function of the component IOSurface. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The bug was discovered 05/10/2017. The weakness was disclosed 05/15/2017 by Patrick Wardle (OSS-Fuzz) with Zimperium zLabs as HT207801 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at support.apple.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-6979 since 03/17/2017. An attack has to be approached locally. The successful exploitation requires a simple authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The advisory points out:

The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 5 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 100256 (Apple TV < 10.2.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc. and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370396 (Apple macOS Sierra Security Update 10.12.5, El Capitan 2017-002 and Yosemite 2017-002 Not Installed (2017-002)).
Upgrading to version 10.2.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
