A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Apple tvOS up to 10.2.0 (Digital Media Player). This issue affects an unknown code of the component WebKit. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The bug was discovered 05/10/2017. The weakness was published 05/15/2017 by Kai Kang (lokihardt) with Zero Day Initiative as HT207801 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at support.apple.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-2536 since 12/01/2016. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 5 days. It is assigned to the family Misc. and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 371242 (Apple Safari 10.1.1 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2017-05-15-7)).
Upgrading to version 10.2.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
