Details
A vulnerability was found in Apple Safari up to 10.1.0 (Web Browser). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function JSObject::ensureLength of the component WebKit. The manipulation of the argument ensureLengthSlow with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The bug was discovered 05/10/2017. The weakness was presented 05/15/2017 by lokihardt with Google Project Zero as HT207804 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at support.apple.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2017-2521 since 12/01/2016. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. Multiple memory corruption issues were addressed with improved memory handling.
A public exploit has been developed by Google Security Research and been published 3 weeks after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 5 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. Upgrading to version 10.1.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
