Details
A vulnerability was found in Apple Safari up to 10.1.0 (Web Browser). It has been classified as critical. Affected is an unknown function of the component WebKit. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The bug was discovered 05/10/2017. The weakness was released 05/15/2017 by Richard Zhu (lokihardt) with Zero Day Initiative as HT207804 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2017-2547 since 12/01/2016. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The advisory points out:
Multiple memory corruption issues were addressed with improved memory handling.
A public exploit has been developed by Google Security Research in Javascript and been published 2 months after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 5 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 100355 (macOS : Apple Safari < 10.1.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 371242 (Apple Safari 10.1.1 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2017-05-15-7)). The code used by the exploit is:
function f() {
let arr = new Uint32Array(10);
for (let i = 0; i < 0x100000; i++) {
parseInt();
}
arr[8] = 1;
arr[-0x12345678] = 2;
}
f();Upgrading to version 10.1.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (42190), Tenable (100355) and SecurityFocus (BID 98474†).
