A vulnerability classified as critical was found in MODX Revolution up to 2.5.6 on PHP 5.3.3 (Content Management System). Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the file setup/index.php. The manipulation of the argument action with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. In MODX Revolution before 2.5.7, when PHP 5.3.3 is used, an attacker is able to include and execute arbitrary files on the web server due to insufficient validation of the action parameter to setup/index.php, aka directory traversal.

The bug was discovered 04/26/2017. The weakness was published 05/18/2017 (Website). The advisory is shared at citadelo.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2017-9067 since 05/18/2017. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
