A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in QEMU (Virtualization Software) (version now known). This issue affects the function virtio_gpu_set_scanout of the file hw/display/virtio-gpu.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Memory leak in the virtio_gpu_set_scanout function in hw/display/virtio-gpu.c in QEMU (aka Quick Emulator) allows local guest OS users to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) via a large number of "VIRTIO_GPU_CMD_SET_SCANOUT:" commands.
The bug was discovered 05/19/2017. The weakness was released 06/01/2017 by Li Qiang with Qihoo 360 (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-9060. The exploitation is known to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 13 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 100630 (GLSA-201706-03 : QEMU: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 276796 (Fedora Security Update for qemu (FEDORA-2017-f941184db1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.qemu.org. A possible mitigation has been published 5 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
