A vulnerability has been found in QEMU (Virtualization Software) (affected version not known) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component USB OHCI Emulation. The manipulation as part of a Return Value leads to a input validation vulnerability. QEMU (aka Quick Emulator), when built with the USB OHCI Emulation support, allows local guest OS users to cause a denial of service (infinite loop) by leveraging an incorrect return value.
The bug was discovered 06/01/2017. The weakness was presented 06/08/2017 by Li Qiang with Qihoo 360 (oss-sec). The advisory is available at openwall.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2017-9330 since 05/31/2017. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 5 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 100630 (GLSA-201706-03 : QEMU: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 170139 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for xen (SUSE-SU-2017:1770-1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.qemu.org. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
