Memory leak in QEMU (aka Quick Emulator), when built with USB EHCI Emulation support, allows local guest OS privileged users to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) by repeatedly hot-unplugging the device.
The bug was discovered 06/06/2017. The weakness was disclosed 06/16/2017 by Li Qiang with Qihoo 360 (oss-sec). The advisory is available at openwall.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2017-9374 since 06/02/2017. Local access is required to approach this attack. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 10 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 101985 (Debian DSA-3920-1 : qemu - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 170139 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for xen (SUSE-SU-2017:1770-1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.qemu.org. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
