A vulnerability was found in QEMU 8.0 (Virtualization Software) and classified as problematic. This issue affects an unknown function of the component IDE AHCI Emulation. Memory leak in QEMU (aka Quick Emulator), when built with IDE AHCI Emulation support, allows local guest OS privileged users to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) by repeatedly hot-unplugging the AHCI device.
The bug was discovered 06/05/2017. The weakness was released 06/16/2017 by Li Qiang with Qihoo 360 (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at openwall.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-9373 since 06/02/2017. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 11 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 101985 (Debian DSA-3920-1 : qemu - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 176099 (Debian Security Update for qemu (DSA 3920-1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.qemu.org. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
