Linux Kernel up to 4.11.7 blkback.c make_response Kernel Memory information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability labeled as problematic has been found in Linux Kernel up to 4.11.7. Affected is the function make_response of the file drivers/block/xen-blkback/blkback.c. Executing a manipulation can lead to information disclosure (Kernel Memory). This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2017-10911. It is possible to launch the attack on the local host. There is not any exploit available. It is advisable to implement a patch to correct this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 4.11.7 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function make_response of the file drivers/block/xen-blkback/blkback.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability (Kernel Memory). The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

The make_response function in drivers/block/xen-blkback/blkback.c in the Linux kernel before 4.11.8 allows guest OS users to obtain sensitive information from host OS (or other guest OS) kernel memory by leveraging the copying of uninitialized padding fields in Xen block-interface response structures, aka XSA-216.

The bug was discovered 06/20/2017. The weakness was released 07/05/2017 with Citrix as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2017-10911 since 07/04/2017. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 14 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 101985 (Debian DSA-3920-1 : qemu - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 176099 (Debian Security Update for qemu (DSA 3920-1)).

Upgrading to version 4.11.8 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (101985) and SecurityFocus (BID 99162†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-102641, VDB-102642, VDB-102643 and VDB-103283. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
