A vulnerability has been found in Wireshark (Packet Analyzer Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function Vendor of the file epan/dissectors/packet-bootp.c of the component DHCP Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. In Wireshark 2.2.0 to 2.2.6 and 2.0.0 to 2.0.12, the DHCP dissector could read past the end of a buffer. This was addressed in epan/dissectors/packet-bootp.c by extracting the Vendor Class Identifier more carefully.
The bug was discovered 06/01/2017. The weakness was disclosed 06/02/2017 (Website). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2017-9351. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 100670 (Wireshark 2.0.x < 2.0.13 / 2.2.x < 2.2.7 Multiple DoS (macOS)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370421 (Wireshark Multiple Vulnerabilities (wnpa-sec-2017-22 to wnpa-sec-2017-33)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
