A vulnerability classified as very critical has been found in Microsoft Office 2007 (Office Suite Software). Affected is an unknown functionality of the component Word File Handler. The manipulation as part of a Word File leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Microsoft Office 2007 SP3 and Word 2007 SP3 allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via a crafted Office document, aka "Word Memory Corruption Vulnerability," a different vulnerability than CVE-2013-3853.
The issue has been introduced in 01/30/2007. The weakness was disclosed 09/10/2013 by Mateusz Jurczyk, Ben Hawkes and Ivan Fratric with Google Security Team as MS13-072 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-3854 since 06/03/2013. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 05/24/2021).
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2415 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69832 (MS13-072: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2845537)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110216 (Microsoft Office Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS13-072)).
Applying the patch MS13-072 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13186.
