The xenlight library (libxl) in Xen 4.0.x through 4.2.x, when IOMMU is disabled, provides access to a busmastering-capable PCI passthrough device before the IOMMU setup is complete, which allows local HVM guest domains to gain privileges or cause a denial of service via a DMA instruction.
The weakness was released 09/10/2013 by George Dunlap as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at seclists.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-4329 since 06/12/2013. Attacking locally is a requirement. A authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69967 (Fedora 18 : xen-4.2.3-1.fc18 (2013-16371)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166813 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for Xen (SUSE-SU-2014:0446-1)).
